about the artwork
'IF YOU LEAVE SOMETHING BEHIND, YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO FIND SOMETHING NEW' – FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER ESTHER HAASE EXPERIENCES MONGOLIA FOR ICON MAGAZINE ON THE MOVE 'If you leave something behind, you have the chance to find something new. Thus is the guiding principle of the nomad. In Mongolia, we got into the vibe – and experienced days of exploration on the move,' photographer ESTHER HAASE tells us about her unforgettable production for ICON MAGAZINE. In front of the camera stood Eny Jaki and retoucher Simone Fiege took care of finishing. Created between the sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai and the Chöwsgöl province with its endless plains was a very special fashion shoot. With everything from yak riders, hunters and shepherds clad in original folklore costumes – silk dresses from Etro and Peter Pilotto, chains from Hermès, velvet gloves from Giorgio Armani and Gucci Looks were used. And it was a home game for the model in the fashion spread shot in Mongolia: Eny Jaki was born in the capital Ulan-Bator where she still lives today.

Elena Iv-skaya

about
Diving into the world of internationally renowned Russian photographer Elena Iv-skaya means opening the doors of a minimalist and stylised world in which sublime female models play freely to the camera. Born in 1977 in Khabarovsk, the artist began her photography career in 2013, a year after moving to Reunion Island. The colours and contrasts that fill her photographs are most likely influenced by her unusual daily life. It all began with a still life taken one evening on her terrace with the help of an old reflex which she would later train with. An artistic director in advertising, her husband found this first attempt interesting and suggested she continue her artistic adventure, leading Elena Iv-skaya to specialise in fashion photography. As she gradually gained more experience, she started to collaborate with prestigious models, agencies and publications such as New African Woman magazine that advocates beauty in all its forms.

David Stewart

about
David Stewart is an advertising and fine-art Photographer/Director who has shaped the visual industry with an evolving portfolio of timeless artworks. Bringing influences from the North, where he started out shooting the tourists of Morecambe promenade, today he lives and works in London. Fascinated by the way people interact, David’s work often recreates his own personal observations, depicting odd characters within surreal moments. Visual punch lines are woven into the fabric of the reality he creates, and although reality is the starting point, it is not the actual point in most of his work. Humorous and at times controversial, each project informs the next, plotting a path in to an unexplored subject matter. David’s work is recognized internationally and he has been awarded amongst many others, the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize, 2015, with a portrait ‘Five Girls’ from his most recent project & book Teenage Pre-Occupation. Other titles include; Cabbage, nominated in 1995 for a BAFTA; Fogeys published in 2001; Thrice Removed in 2009 and his latest film Stray, included in the London Short Film Festival in 2014. Clients to date include… Absolut, American Express, BT Sport, Channel 4, D&AD, Gillette, ITV, Landrover, Mars, National Theatre, Sky, Sol, The Times, Virgin and VW.

Dougie Wallace, an East-London based photographer, grew up in Glasgow and is internationally recognised for his long-term social documentary projects.

Throughout each thematic project, Wallace’s expressive street photography carries a distinct direct and visually exaggerated style. I used to work there as a bartender when I came to Hamurg and will always have a special spot for this place in my heart.

Cyrill Matter

about
Cyrill Matter was born and raised in Zurich, studied commerce and got a position in an ad agency. On a whim, and out of boredom, he bought a cheap camera. He started taking pictures – and was bitten. Within a year he had left his job; he spent the next 12 months intensively learning the skills of a photographer, working as a photography assistant while reading and watching everything he could get his hands on relating to the topic. After that relatively short time, he decided to strike out on his own and try to make it as a professional photographer. Not long afterwards, sitting in a New York café, he encountered a German creative director – Thomas Hayo – who agreed to view what was then a thin portfolio. The rest is history: with Hayo’s encouragement Matter moved to New York and had been signed by photography agent Marek Milewicz. Within four months. Since then he has established himself as a respected photographer, particularly in the fields of portraiture and men’s fashion.
For Matter, photography ultimately belongs not on a screen but in print. He has enjoyed working for publications like GQ, Vanity Fair USA, L’Uomo Vogue or Das Magazin. This love for a haptic object is also why he decided to produce the book ‘Chapter One’, so that he and others could review and share his work to date while holding it in their hands – in time, and as his work evolves, chapters two, three etc. will follow.

Making Pictures

about
Neil Bedford likes to leave very little to chance. He plans his shoots down to the last detail and is meticulous in conducting research and gathering reference material.
Born and raised in Bradford, he still splits his time between his hectic South London base and the peace and quiet of Yorkshire where he finds it easier to plan upcoming projects. Trained at the London College of Fashion, he pays close attention to how tone and colour combine for creative effect – it’s this distinctive look that unites his diverse portfolio.
Two of his ongoing collaborations reflect Neil’s versatile skill-set. His pictures of Kasabian, created with Amsterdam based artist and designer Aitor Throup, present the band in a fascinatingly intimate way, while his shoots for the much-revered slow living journal Kinfolk show off a more conceptual side of his practice.
Clients include Adidas, Apple, Ben Sherman, British GQ, Burberry, Dunhill, Ellesse, Farfetch, i-D, Jigsaw, Kinfolk, Nike, O2, Rapha, Riposte, Sony, Mr Porter, and Visa.
